Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can Social Workers provide counselling?
Yes. Registered Social Workers are regulated professionals trained to assess and treat mental health concerns, and to provide counselling and psychotherapy. In Alberta, our title and practice are regulated by the Alberta College of Social Workers, which sets professional and ethical standards.
2. Is what I share confidential?
Yes. Your privacy is protected by professional standards and privacy law. What you share stays between us, with limited exceptions required by law, such as a risk of serious harm to you or someone else, or a court order. I'll explain this clearly at the start so there are no surprises.
3. Do I need to share my cultural background or immigration story?
Only if and when you want to. You never have to educate me or justify your experiences. I approach every client with cultural humility and curiosity, and I'll follow your lead about what matters to you.
4. What is evidence-based therapy?
It means using approaches that research has shown to be effective. I use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which helps with unhelpful thought patterns, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), which builds on your strengths to reach your goals. Both are practical and goal-oriented.
5. How do I know if I need ongoing sessions or just one?
Many people benefit from a single session, especially if they have a specific concern. Others prefer regular support. We'll talk through it together, and you can decide what feels right.

6. Are sessions available online?
Yes. Sessions are available online, so you can meet from the comfort and privacy of your own home, with no commute and a flexible schedule. This is especially helpful for busy parents, shift workers, and anyone who prefers virtual support.
7. Does insurance cover social work counselling?
Yes. Registered Social Workers are covered by many Canadian extended health insurance plans. Coverage and limits vary by plan, so we recommend checking your benefits for "Registered Social Worker" or "counselling services" coverage. I'm happy to provide receipts for your claims.
8. Do you offer counselling in languages other than English?
Yes, I offer counselling in both English and Tagalog. Speaking in the language you think and feel in can make it easier to express yourself and feel understood.
